NORTHERN IRELAND
CRIMINAL INJURIES COMPENSATION SCHEME (CICS) 2002

In May of 2002, a new tariff-based scheme went into effect for Northern Ireland criminal injuries compensation claims. This new tariff-based scheme means that each victim of a specific trauma and same injury will receive the same amount of money for compensation. Applicant’s award amy be denied for many reasons, and now the Agency must give a reason for the decision. In addition, this new scheme makes it easier for people to be eligible for bereavement payments. Psychological injuries are now given greater recognition and payments to people not at the scene of the crime are now available. People with prior conviction are not longer banned from claims, however there is a penalty points system in place. This penalty points system could cause a reduction or denial of an award for claimants with prior convictions. Childhood sexual assault and abuse victims prior to May 1st, 2002 ae able to submit an application for compensation under the new tariff scheme. For victims of assault, you should report the incident to the police without delay and record the command and control number for your records. You should also seek immediate medical attention.
